Final Video of the risk project

L3 RISK - Ali & Sophie - FINAL from cmdiploma on Vimeo.

This is the final video of the risk project, I am pleased with the end result however I think would of prefferred it to look like I wanted it to before I had trouble with final cut express file and footage problems. But after having to quickly go back and edit the video in a of hour cause of techinical problems and create another soundtrack think it turned out well considering the less amount of time and treatment it had to the footage that had to be selected and edited all again.

What skills have you learnt?

I have developed Skills in time manegment and organization skills and how to be flexible with it. I have learnt how to work in a team without having to many differences and have been able to make it fair and equal. I have also learnt how to craete art with dominoes and card towers also card dominoes. I never thought I would of done this artistic activity unless reseason for it and I really enjoyed stacking cards and dominoes. I preffered the dominoes and domino cards and maybe even develop the skills I learnt from this project to a hobby. I have learnt much from this project and I think it went well.

Key Moment: Would be actaully being able to this project and seeing the finsihed result of the video and being pleased.

Also when the files could not be imported in to final cut express this was a very stressful and worrying experience but we solved it all.

Check Point 2

As a group I have created with them a pea animation, using tracing paper, projector, snap shots.

I researched into world best card stackers and researched more into Bryan Berg. Also I researched into flippy cat and other youtube video that were just ordinary people experimenting.

I have experimented with dominoes and cards at home and have been building them stacking them to create a pattern or art work.

I have been researching into card dominoes also from youtube videos.

Feedback from the class

Today in media we watched through everyones risk video and thought about two words that reflected their risk video.

1. One word representing something good about the video.

2. One word representing something bad about the video.

i took down the feedback me and Sophie had on our risk video:

Good feedback:

1. Concept x4
2. effort x2
3. Kool
4. Different
5.Dominoes!
6. Pace
7. Creative
8. editing

I am pleased with the good feedback and I happy with how the video is recognized more as an experimental project that needs effort to try to make something like it. I am pleased with how people liked the concept of the risk and video.

Bad feedback
1. Length
2. to create Shapes/patterns
3. pace to slow
4. artificial
5. music to long
6. Comedy

I would agree that there could have been more patterns and time, and the music went on to long as well as the video and becomes boring after a while it could of maybe had more energetic music to match the fast paced visuals.

Sunday, 13 December 2009

In the last three weeks I have learnt about how to use time and how to plan clearly using the time otherwise there are consequences to your finished projects. I have learnt about how research can make you understand mre of what ideas you have but you cant really visualize them exactly so other practitioners work help you to see a different insight. You shouldd always create other plans alose with research included incase you first idea does not reflect the result you hoped for. Also you should plan how the video will be edtited and look.

Change or Add

What would I add to the Risk video?

I would of decided to set up more cameras then the video would of had more use of camera shots/angles. I think it needed more camera work in the video as I was mostly trying to set atmosphere in the video than visuals aswell. I think that I would of filmed more footage also and maybe done quick cuts to make the video about a minute but whith more risky content.

What would I change if I had more time for the project?

I would of changed the speed of some clips of footage when the cards or dominoes are collapsing I think it could of been faster in some parts of footage and slower in others but not to slow it becomes boring. I also would of maybe had included titles in the video maybe informing such as, dominoes, card dominoes, card tower, maybe a little information about the risk of this idea just so the audinece understand the visuals more clearly. I would of edited it a little more if there was mroe time. I think the soundtrack could of had more loops of sound in to set more atmosphere, however there was not much time to create it and it works effectively overall anyway.

Editing

I have wrote a page about editing the footage in my sketch book:

The aim of Colerdige Lesson:

To import the editied version of tape 1 files from longroad final cut express laptop into final cut express at Coleridge computer then finish editing our video.

Problem: I edited tape 1 and wanted to import that edited version into final cut express at Colerdige, Then that would only of left me and Sophie to edit selections out from tape 2 and tidy them up.

But because the files that we transferred of the edited versionfrom my laptop at longroad did not import into the coleridge computer we were editing on, me and Sophie were then advised to just edit the 2nd tape of footage while waiting for the footage to be brought to us from longroad.

We selected the parts of the footage we wanted and it took atleast two hours, The our other footage was brough to us 3rd lesson so then we could import that then put the bit of footage together then be finished nearly. But final cut express had to be updated for the footage to be put in so we did this process however the footage me and Sophie spent two hours on was not updated because it was seperate project and then this could not open in final cut express. Then we tried working on another machine and carrying the tape 1 footage over on hard drive then to work on that project but media was offline and it would only connect some bits of footage. But me and Sophie had the correct files carried across to connect with final cut express so the problem was confusing.

So towards nearly forty minutes of the lesson we realized that it was not going to connect so me and Sophie split up and she created the soundtrack loop and I quickly had to edit bits together to craete at least some kinda of risk video.

It was dissapoiting because some of the footage I could not locate in the files or would not let me import in so that meant there was not as much camera work used in our video. There is some but it would have been nice to see the dominoes and cards falling drom different camera angles. There is some bits of footrage I found from tape 1 and 2 and editied together and they are in the finish video wheere the camera cuts sofly to a different camera angle but I was aiming to have more. Alos me and Sophie just choose type writing title and normal title which could of been more effective and artistic however we thought the video more important putting together than decorating it with little effctes.

In reflection I think that the final video looks effective and how I wanted it just needed more camera shots and more editing done to it, however I think it has captured risk in our experimental ways using dominoes and cards.
Here are some print screens I took when editing the footage on final cut express.

Editing Selections

Today we have uploaded footage on to my laptop while I have been using Sophies laptop selecting footage from our video to take to coleridge tomorrow to edit there. while I have been doing this Sophie has been creating a soundtrack on garage band for our video. We are hoping to aim for a gentle genre of a tune this is because our video has fast paste cuts and slow pace cuts and the music would fit better to the pace and give atmosphere.

Tomorrows Plans

1. So tomorrow we will upload the other tapes footage on to the laptop while that is uploading we then can look through the other footage on tape 1 and select the parts we want then that will make it quicker to select the parts from tape two as its same footage just different camera shots.

2. Then me and Sophie should make a soundtrack in garage band for our video or download free music.

3. I will begin to think about how we should edit the risk video,
Thinking about visuals such as titles, effects, and sound.

Todays Lesson

In todays lesson me and Sophie uploaded the footage we filmed on tuesdays lesson at Coleridge onto Sophies laptop. It took most of the lesson just to upload one tape of footage so next lesson tomorrow we will upload the next tape of footage. Because we use two cameras for different angles therefore we have two tapes of the footage.

Also I have been researching into free music for out risk project to use in the background. Me and Sophie have been thinking about using maybe some music that is not to over powering and is quite quiet.

Also I have done some sketch work into days lesson annotating some images and talking about photos I stuck in.

In reflection I think todays lesson went well however time consuming with all the footage to upload. Also some websites I was looking at for free music were blocked.

Filming Day

Today at Coleridge Me and Sophie began to film our risk project.

We filmed in a different room not the normal Coleridge class room we have lectures in. This is because we wanted a room with not much activity happening.

The location we chose was a staff room inside, it had tables which were helpful for us to set the equipment up onto. Then we was given a stand up light from Pete to help us light.

I took the role of filming when Sophie was stacking up the domino cards idea and I had to keep on moving around the room between each cameras to operate them without getting in the way of the filming process. This was because Sophie was moving the cards along the floor and I wanted everything filmed and captured.

Here is a picture of me filming the cards Sophie is stacking on the floor.

Here a picture I took of the camera filming Sophie stacking up the cards like dominoes.

Equipment we used.

Here are some pictures of me stacking the dominoes in line before we filmed.

This was our setting for the dominoes because we stacked the card tower up on two tables pushed together but the gap in between them effected the dominoes to stand up so we movd the setting onto a single table. Using white plain paper we stuck the paper down with blue tack to secure it to stop it sliding to cause a risk to our experiment.

Here is the light we used as you can see it gives of a nice streak of light which helped the camera to pic up more hopefully.

Reflection:

Todays filming went well than I thought it would of, I did not think that it would take so long, but having to experiment we took longer as we have not really ever practiced that much with our ideas. We did have problems with the cards not being able to fall over at the bends then stopping which was not finishing the result we wanted. But me and Sophie experimented in ways to stand the cards close together make them more bent but we still could not overcome the problem witht he cards not falling all the way. There may have been one time and one piece of footage where they fall down smoothly with no struggle. With the dominoes me and Sophie came up with a idea on how to make the dominoes fall over at the bends and that was to place them closer at a angle but using this method with the cards does not reflect the same result.

Problems during filming:

1. Cards did not fall down like dominoes as we wanted.
2. dominoes were difficult to stand up on the two doubles so had to waste time setting up in the corner at the single table (loosing our time)
3. The card tower was so venerable such as I opened the door and the card tower fell down.
4. Knocking the table accidently.
5. Cameras ran out of tape whilst still working.

Things that went all to plan:

1. I am pleased with the footage we have.
2. I think our ideas worked effectively and hopefully capture risk.
3. All equipment was planned and ready for us.
4. We followed our planned schedule for the week and on track with the project.

Overall I believe me and Sophie had worked well and we achieved what we had planned for ourselves and this project.

Research in class Today

In class today I have filled in the schedule for the week and when me and Sophie will be filming and editing. I have done some work on my sketch book
sticking pictures in and annotating them.

I have been researching on youtube into domino videos that use glue or tape. (some cheating material) although I came across this video named card domino
It was about a project some one has created by bending the cards slightly and stacking them up like dominoes and knocking the m down. It is a very effective piece of art and has inspired me.

Here is a video I have found to demonstrate my research.

Experimenting with Cards and Dominoes

Here is a page from my sketch book and I annotated and wrote about the experiment.

At the weekend I experimented with different methods of using dominoes and cards. I tried to create similar examples with the cards and dominoes I reserached into on youtube. Such as building the towers with dominoes. And building dominoes around the cards.

Here is some tester photos I took of me trying to display Dominoes in a different way with the cards involved.

Here is a photo of me stacking two cards above a domino.
I was testing to see whether me and Sophie could try another
approach to displaying our risk project. although this method did not work,
I pushed the domino and it knocked the others down with the cards as well ,
because the cards are not much taller and to close to the dominoes.

I wanted the end result to be with the dominoes falling down in a card tunnel then leading out to create a pattern. However this example will not be effective.

I looked onto youtube and I found a video of a tutorial showing how to stack up dominoes. I thought I would experiment with this idea, so I tried a similar example.
Looking at someone else's video they made little bridges with dominoes and the knocked down through the bridge, I really liked this idea and thought I would try to mix the idea with the building and building bridges.

It was difficult stacking the dominoes on this surface of floor so when coming to our project me and Sophie need to think about a smooth surface. Because the floor made the dominoes knock down before I had finished the train of dominoes it made my experiment hard to see it if was a effective or not. So the surface we build on could be a risk for our project so we need to think of this importantly. in reflection I think this idea would work well and maybe we could build little bridges around the tower of cards with a domino train. I will share my idea with Sophie see if it is agreeable.

Research into tutorials on stacking up cards

In this youtube video card tutorial it shows you how to stack cards up in the air on your hand. I thought it was entertaining and a great idea.
I will show partner this video, but we will not use this method as it appears difficult and needs lots of training. But it can be other research into experimental ways to act with cards.

This video is just focusing on domino towers someone project, I never thought of the idea
of domino towers only card towers, so I think this works effectively. It appears more simple
to do but was not the idea me and Sophie had in mind. I think that this method of stacking up dominos
works effectively but I was planning on the idea of having maybe a pattern with the dominos fallen because
the towers fallen do not create the type of planned result I am aiming for.

This is just a short tutorial of someone building up domino towers and showing how it can be done. Although thhis video captures a good insight of the flexibility with dominos I do not think its instructional or the most inspiring one I have researched inot.

Todays Lesson at Coleridge

Today at Coleridge we worked on our sketch books and we annotated them in more detail.

We are to write more description about our work in our sketchbook of these lines:

1. What are you experimenting with?
2. Why have you chosen this particular form?
3. Where does the experiment relate to the capture project?
4. How will you do things differently or improve it?

I went back through my sketch book and annotated sketches and answered the above questions in more detail.

Here is a picture I took on Sophie in lesson experimenting with the cards.

Here is a picture of dominoes I took at coleridge at the desk I was working on.

Here a picture of me stacking up Dominoes in todays lesson I was trying to create the letters r,i,s,k using the smallest amount of dominoes.

In reflection I think todays lesson went well and I got lots of work done in my sketchbook and planning. I feel me and Sophie are now ready to begin filming by early next week.

Planning for Tomorrows Lesson at Colerdige

Tomorrows Planning: Me and Sophie have agreed to plan more into our risk project, such as setting.theme and location.

We will plan more into how our project will look and maybe begin to think of how to portray the message of risk through our project more than visuals of the Dominoes and cards falling. So maybe we should begin about thinking of using titles with related key words that will complete our video.

I will do more research to include into my sketch book about artist and their work.

Hopefully by tomorrow me and Sophie will have planned everything so by next week we can get straight to filming the risk video then evualate.

Test Footage

Experimental Risk Project

Today me and Sophie have created some test footage, using istop motion connected to the camera positioned on the table with the use of the tripod. We had some plain white paper on our desk which we were to stack the cards on and Dominoes. Here is some test footage of me and Sophie experimenting with the cards.

SOPHIE AND ALI CARD TOWER TEST 1 from cmdiploma on Vimeo.

I think that todays lesson went well, In reflection I thought that the cards are much more difficult to stack up than to position dominoes in a line. I think that it was a fun experiment and a risky one. Because in one situation we were nearly finished building the tower and stacking the last of the cards to be the pointed tip of the tower. But however the force and weight of the cards at the top tumbled down. This was a risk we commonly know of.

With the dominoes when I standing them on the paper I was creating a bend for the dominoes to curve around and then knock down in a curvy pattern. But the dominoes I stood up did not and just fell down all in a line. So me and Sophie had to design a trick that would stop this problem from preventing. So Sophie came up with the idea of placing closer to eachother when closer to eachother at a slight angle at thecurves this is what we did and it worked really well.

In conclusion I think that out test footage worked really, I think it was a small challenging experiment and I have not done any of this before so in reflection it went well as me and Sophie wanted it to. Because me and Sophie thought that both ideas were effective we then had the idea of the card tower stacked up with the dominoes circuling around the tower that way its shows two ways of different risks.

Collecting Materials

Here are the Dominos and now we can get ready to start making Mine and Sophies project.

I came across the idea of having fake snow for the project maybe as well so that the dominos could sit in the fake snow and look different.

Here a pack of playing cards we can use to stack up for the other project idea if the other one does not go to plan.

Research for dominoes

Dominoes are called "bones" because the earliest domino tiles were made from animal bones or ivory. In addition to "bones", dominoes are also called "tiles", "stones", or "men".

Originally, dominoes were made from ivory inlaid of with ebony pips. Ivory dominoes are among the most sought-after and rarest domino sets. This is because the harvesting of ivory has resulted in the slaughter and near-extinction of elephants and other large mammals. The ivory ban was imposed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) after the number of African elephants declined by almost 50 percent in the 1980s. It is currently illegal to produce ivory dominoes, as well as other ivory products. However, it is legal to sell historical ivory domino sets produced before 1989, though there is no easy way to date most ivory, so it may be difficult to sell a vintage domino set without the proper documentation showing the history of the set.

Reference: http://www.domino-games.com/faq/Why-Are-Dominoes-Called-Bones.html

So-called "vegetable ivory", made from the Tagua Nut, known as the "ivory nut", has been used for over two hundred years by craftsmen to make dice, dominoes, & chess pieces. The ivory nut is close-grained and very hard, and its structure, color, and grain is similar to that of mammal ivory, though it is slightly softer.

Some of the more collectible domino sets are made of "bois durci," a 19th-century version of plastic made of sawdust and egg whites. Later, dominoes were made from Bakelite, a form of plastic invented in 1907 and manufactured until the 1950s.

Today, dominoes are made from less-exotic materials such as wood, plastic, and even aluminum. There are also dominoes made from paper cardstock similar to playing cards.

Dominoes are generally either made of white material with black dots, or dark material with white dots. Some sets use color dots (one color per suit) to make it easier to make matches - just connect the colors.

There are even some dominoes which use numbers instead of dots, making it still-easier to make matches. Still other sets use pictures of objects, such as animals, flowers, or food instead of dots or numbers. These sets are especially popular with children.

Stacking Cards Research

I have research into the worlds best card stacker Bryan Berg he has inspired me and how much effort and talent he has to me it appear possible. I have added some videos below of his work I enjoy and entertain me

I have discovered a risk about his art work: A percentage of the public audience said to him "do you not have anything else better to do than wasting your life stacking cards" Other people say that his talent is something to show,

So there is that risk where some of his audience do not think that his talent should be so important and the rest say they enjoy it.

Bryan Berg was asked to create an car advert,to show how the vibration-reducing features of the ES create one of the smoothest vehicles anywhere, we wanted to put the ES in the most fragile and unstable environment imaginable.

Domino Research

This is some of sketch book research I did into these artist I have chosen to be inspiring.

I have been researching into videos on youtube of creative people with unique talents.
I have came fond of a man (presenting flippy cat) who creates images with his dominos he likes to use
themes such as mother day and christmas and egyptian. He started of creating little domino art works then he made
them for larger companies such as youtube and a merry christmas invitation.
Also his cat is a risk to the dominos as he uses his pet cat as the important aspect which knocks the dominos
over with its paw.

Background Research

http://www.worlddomino.com/history.htm

Domino games have been played by kings and presidents. The oldest known domino set was found in Tutankhamen's tomb, among the ruins of Thebes. Tutankhamen was king of ancient Egypt in the 18th dynasty, 1355 BC. The set is now in King Tutankhamen's Museum, Cairo, Egypt.

According to historians, a Chinese set with 32 pieces existed in the year 1120 AD. President Lyndon B. Johnson was a devotee of dominoes and played with friends in Texas.
