Experimental and Underground cinema

I have chosen to look at this short film Dog Star Man because i found it interesting and wanted to explore about the creator and why they chose to make such a complicated film to understand and what the actual plot was meant to be projecting through all the effects.

I thought that this short film was symbolizing the birth of a new born child, however all the images that were inserted into the short film as well made the film confusing. after researching some information on it I found out that it was in fact the plot of a man who is a woodsman carrying an axe climbing up a mountain to cut down a dead tree, while with the footage of a new born child and in the womb. However watching through this short film I could not make clear of the plot. I thought it was interesting and has stood out to me, I think it would have been such a risk to create this type of effective film however my had my full attention and I liked it so it must have been a risk worth taking for.

  • It was created through images being inserted into holes punched in successive frames of the film to produce a kinda of collage effect. Also when Stan Brakhage was acting the role of the male character his wife took over to film.

The main character was acted by the Stan Brakhage who is also the creator of the film Dog Star Man. He won an American non narrative film maker who is considered to be one of the most important figures 20th century experimental films. He also taught the creators of South Park and director of Ants.

Here were some of the short films we looked at:

The Colour Box I liked this short film it showsa the contrast of the colours and the patterns are really effective, I like the music because it gets me into the groove.

The Big Shave I found this short film really disturbing however It was this feeling of being uncomfortable but in away made me laugh in shock. It gave such a weird reaction from me and the other class mates.

Malcolm Le Grice - Berlin Horse [1970]

This short film was continous and maybe was bit to long but I enjoyed how it reflect the beauty of the horse it made me think of two words, Rainbow and spirit because the transition effect of the horse with a distant fade of its figure following behind like a ghostly spirit.
